Rashleigh Mineral Gallery, Royal Cornwall Museum
The Royal Cornwall Museum (RCM) houses and displays the internationally important Rashleigh Collection of minerals. Philip Rashleigh F.R.S. (1729 – 1811) family home was at Menabilly, near Fowey, in Cornwall. He began collecting around 1760 and his wealth, his contacts with local mine owners and captains and his acquaintance with other collectors, dealers and mineralogists in the UK and Europe, resulted in him acquiring a substantial collection of minerals, A large part of the wide ranging collection is displayed in cabinets on the ground floor of the museum. Some of the specimens are beautifully illustrated in two books published by Rashleigh in 1797 and 1802.
The RCM has recently been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards its redevelopment, and there is a rumour that the displays of the Rashleigh minerals might be under threat. There is a questionnaire on the RCM web site that asks for information about what one thinks is important in Cornish history and culture. There is no mention of the Rashleigh Collection in the questionnaire. In fact, the collection is not mentioned anywhere on the RCM web site, other than in captions to photographs of minerals.
By completing the questionnaire and making comments on the importance of the Rashleigh Collection and its display in the museum, the directors and management will hopefully be influenced in making decisions favourable towards protecting the collection and retaining the displays within the museum’s redevelopment plans. The questionnaire has not been widely publicised and closes at the end of March.
For further information, here is a link to the press article on the Heritage Lottery grant ... tery_Fund/
and a link to an article published in about the museum, including a picture of the Rashleigh Gallery (The web site is a popular and much visited, major resource on minerals and mineralogy) ... equired%21
also a link to the RCM web site and survey ... eum-survey
The questionnaire need only take a few minutes to complete in order to get the message across to the RCM directors and management.
