EMC2012 - Francoforte sul Meno, 2 -6 settembre 2012

Cari Soci,

come sicuramente già saprete, il congresso SIMP di quest’anno si svolgerà in concomitanza con la prima European Mineralogical Conference, emc2012, che si terrà a Francoforte dal 2 al 6 settembre 2012.

Insieme alla SIMP, le otto principali società mineralogiche europee partecipano alla Conference: i rispettivi rappresentanti nel comitato scientifico hanno individuato 13 Temi e selezionato i conveners che hanno suggerito 35 sessioni totali (v. Theme and sessions).

La sede della Conference sarà presso il Campus Westend della Goethe University: l’Hörsaalzentrum, in cui sono situate le sale congressuali, è molto ben collegato al centro di Francoforte ed all’aeroporto tramite i mezzi pubblici (biglietti inclusi nella quota di iscrizione).

Gli importi delle quote di iscrizione sono indicati nel sito web del convegno: 150 € per studenti (e non strutturati) e 270 € per gli altri partecipanti.
Le iscrizioni sono già aperte e fino al 15 maggio sarà possibile sottomettere gli abstract.

E’ previsto che durante il convegno abbiano luogo le assemblee annuali dei soci delle Società partecipanti. L’Assemblea Generale dei Soci SIMP si svolgerà martedì 4 settembre, a partire dalle ore 18:30.

Tutte le Società avranno inoltre la possibilità di consegnare i propri premi annuali in una Award Ceremony che si svolgerà mercoledì 5 settembre e che includerà le plenary talks del vincitore della Medaglia EMU 2011 (Sébastien Merkel) e del 2012 Hallimond lecturer.

La SIMP premierà i vincitori dei premi 2012: Tesi di dottorato, Borsa di studio per l’Estero, premio “Ugo Panichi”, premio “Enzo Michele Piccirillo”.

SESSION 6A. Handling structural complexity: theoretical and experimental methods applied to unravel structural hierarchies

We would like to draw you attention and invite your to contribute to Session 6a "Handling structural complexity: theoretical and experimental methods applied to unravel structural hierarchies" at the forthcoming European Mineralogical Conference (EMC2012) in Frankfurt/Main (Germany), 2-6 September 2012 (http://emc2012.uni-frankfurt.de/).
The session is part of a Theme 6 on "Mineralogical crystallography" and will showcase recent research on structural complexities in minerals and their mutual relations; applications of experimental and computational tools for research in structural complexities; and approaches in modelling of structural hierarchies and crystal-chemistry of complex structures.
Keynote speaker Enrico Mugnaioli (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz) will give a talk on "Electron Diffraction Tomography as a tool for unraveling pseudosymmetries and intergrowth phases at the nanoscale: charoite and M2O-Al2O-WO3 system".
Deadline for abstract submission is 15.05.2012.

Solving complex structures has become easier and easier with the development of powerful diffraction facilities and mathematical approaches for solving the phase problem and improving structure refinement methods. Even in generally poor crystallizing mineral species, provided that a discrete very small crystal is found, it is increasingly more common to obtain sufficient quality data useful for crystal structure determinations. This increase in data availability has brought out an ever increasing number of new mineral descriptions which bridge the known structural complexities and reveal new ones.

In this context, it is now possible and necessary to go beyond the mineral crystal-chemistry focused primarily on isomorphous solid solutions and to develop models that allow understanding multifaceted nature of structural hierarchies brought up by increasingly swarming species with complex relations. Whereas tools for accurate description of structure topologies along with a complete chemistry have reached their maturity, it is our feeling that methodologies which would allow prediction and explanation of complications intrinsic to a particular mineral group or mineral variety still expect significant improvement.
This knowledge, intrinsic to Mineral Sciences, is one of the main challenges in the advancement of modern Mineralogy.

Contributions which increase our general knowledge of structural complexities in minerals and their mutual relations, applications of experimental and computational tools for research in structural complexities and approaches in modelling of structural hierarchies and crystal-chemistry of complex structures are warmly welcome to this session.

molti di noi hanno già ricevuto l'ultimo numero (Giugno 2012) della rivista Elements, dal titolo "Fukushima Daiichi" (Guest Editors: Takashi Murakami - University of Tokyo - and Rodney C. Ewing - University of Michigan).
Gli articoli pubblicati in questo numero richiamano il ruolo che le Scienze Mineralogiche (in senso lato) possono, e devono, giocare nell'ambito del complesso mondo della tecnologia nucleare.
Abbiamo la grande opportunità di avere Rod Ewing come uno dei quattro plenaristi de EMC2012 in Francoforte, nonchè come "frontman" della sessione "4d - Natural and synthetic host phases for radionuclides" (Theme 4 – Applied mineralogy; Convenors: D. Bosbach, G.D. Gatta, R. Pattrick, S. Yudintsev).
Mi sono personalmente impegnato affinchè la sessione 4d diventi anche un momento di riflessione, discussione e proposte per la nostra comunità verso le sfide del presente e del futuro.
