Crystal formation during thermal oxidation of shungite

Abstract:
Using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, micro-sized crystals formed during the thermal oxidation of shungite were studied. The crystals have been identified as bultfonteinite, "allanite" and cornubite; they were not found in the original shungite sample. It has been suggested that the mechanism of microcrystal formation is desublimation (crystallization from the gas phase).
